For those not following, his wife has extremely strong ties to Egyptian Intelligence and he very much may have been acting as a spy. This goes beyond just corruption.

Durbin and Stabenow didn’t go ahead and say this without clearing it with Schumer.

Pretty soon the only Senate “Democrats” left not calling for Menendez’s resignation will be members of the Ethics Committee + Manchin, Sinema, Feinstein and Menendez himself.

This whole “Guilty until proven innocent” mentality that we’ve developed in this country is disgusting and needs to be kicked in the crotch. I hope Bob sticks to his guns.

There is absolutely no rule saying that you have to be convicted of a crime before you are forced to resign from the Senate. Al Franken did far less and he was forced to resign. And if you don’t think he’s guilty when this is the second time, when they found half a million in cash secreted in envelopes and hidden in clothing around his home, when he googled how much a gold bar is worth… you must think Trump isn’t guilty of the many things he’s been indicted for.

“forced”, Franken made the choice to resign and in hindsight he absolutely shouldn’t have. If congress wants to impeach Bob and the senate wants to convict him and remove him, then great. “Calls for resignation” is chicken shit.

He wouldn’t need to be impeached, Senators can be expelled on a 2/3 vote in the Senate and the House doesn’t need to be involved.

If Schumer scheduled that vote this week, I think he would be toast.

Oh, well that’s the same votes needed though. I just looked up if a senator can be impeached, and apparently one had, so maybe the house could start one if they wanted to? but since he’s a senator it wouldn’t be required. If they have the votes and feel that strongly about it though they should do it then. Have a backbone, take a vote and everyone lives with the fallout from it instead of this vague threatening “requesting resignation” B.S.

No, he was forced. Schumer was going to take away all of his committee assignments and make him a pariah.

That’s not forcing resignation, that’s leave with pay. MTG had her committee assignments taken away in 2021 too, she’s still there. Ilhan Omar was removed for the foreign affairs committee, she’s still there.

Having your side of the senate shun you is absolutely forcing resignation. How is he supposed to do his job when none of them will talk to him?

Like I said, leave with pay. They can’t stop him from voting or speaking on the floor though which is all their main jobs.

They absolutely can stop him from speaking on the floor. But true, they can’t stop him from voting- with Republicans. Which is one of the reasons to force him out.

He’s already entered a not guilty plea to the criminal charges, so why would he cave to the politicians at this point? They’d just try to say that was an admission of guilt.

It may seem that he doesn’t need the support of his caucus and party, but it only seems that way. He is dead in the water politically and is considered a pariah. Schumer is letting him address the full caucus tomorrow, but the writing is on the wall.

IT’s DC, he’s only “Dead until the next scandal”. No one is talking about George Santos anymore. I guess I just don’t see any benefit for Menendez to resign. If he is convicted of these charges he’s done no matter what. If he resigns and is found not guilty he’s shot himself in the foot for no reason.

He’s sold his influence for gold bars. He was chair of Foreign Relations and manipulated policy for money. It’s also a national security issue. I haven’t seen this since ABSCAM. It isn’t just a regular scandal,

allegedly, and Fine assume he’s eventually convicted of that, the senate has the means and ability to remove him from his committees and kick him out entirely. What’s in it for Bob if he were to resign? I can’t think of anything.

As you say it’s up to Bob, but if he doesn’t resign he can’t count on his friends or funders for his election next year. Those will go to his primary challenger.
