It may seem that he doesn’t need the support of his caucus and party, but it only seems that way. He is dead in the water politically and is considered a pariah. Schumer is letting him address the full caucus tomorrow, but the writing is on the wall.
IT’s DC, he’s only “Dead until the next scandal”. No one is talking about George Santos anymore. I guess I just don’t see any benefit for Menendez to resign. If he is convicted of these charges he’s done no matter what. If he resigns and is found not guilty he’s shot himself in the foot for no reason.
He’s sold his influence for gold bars. He was chair of Foreign Relations and manipulated policy for money. It’s also a national security issue. I haven’t seen this since ABSCAM. It isn’t just a regular scandal,
allegedly, and Fine assume he’s eventually convicted of that, the senate has the means and ability to remove him from his committees and kick him out entirely. What’s in it for Bob if he were to resign? I can’t think of anything.
As you say it’s up to Bob, but if he doesn’t resign he can’t count on his friends or funders for his election next year. Those will go to his primary challenger.
And if he resigns and wants to run again he’s toast. If his goal is to get reelected he’s much better off statistically to run as the incumbent. So should he resign at this point? absolutely not, the senate has a method on the books to kick him out if they so choose, and his criminal defense lawyers would slap him if he did. There’s absolutely no upside for him to resign unless it was a part of a plea agreement in his criminal case.
