I’ll take the bait! I definitely wouldn’t say renting is BETTER, but your comment definitely exposes some privileged views. Not everyone has the skills, competency, time, or cash on hand to manage their own repairs. There’s also other advantages to renting. Most obviously is the fact that it’s a lot easier to move - signing a new lease is so much less of a hassle than dealing with all of the things involved with selling and buying a home. This was somewhat mitigated by having equity, but right now it can take 5-10 years to have positive equity in a home.
Don’t get me wrong, the article is absolutely dystopian, dude’s paying 1400 a month for a shoebox. There is a lot that’s ridiculous about his situation, but to throw out all of the actual advantages renting can have is as disingenuous of a take as if I were to say buying is a gamble. what im stabbing at, that this article points out. is that everyone is so willing to give up control and ownership and now are like “wtf why is everything so expensive” because you go and pay that ~$2000 rent instead of living in your car and the gym for a year or two. The world owes us nothing, and the world stops for no one. if you are paying money and are happy with the result, good. but i bet you all have a story where you paid and didn’t get what you wanted or something else entirely.
