u can “touch grass” without going outside there are other things to do without going outside besides being mad at the shitty part of the internet maybe try to find new hobbies, there are even things to do on the internet that dont involve social media, or range bait content, watc some movies, read some books, read some non political (or maybe differently political would be better) like science news.

but besides that u stop engaging with content by just doing it, the algorithms for all social media and content websites just feed u waterver u click on/watch if u just ignore that stuff it will disappear from ur feeds, so just find other stuff u actually like to watch and specifically search for it and ignore “recommendations” as far as reddit goes dont go to r/all just look at specific communities that u like.

Developing a happy outlook isn’t easy. It’s a skill that you need to practice and cultivate over time. Recognize that rage-bait and fascist content is stirring up unproductive emotions in you and that you do have some agency over which thoughts you choose to identify with and give attention to.

Read a little bit about stoicism if you’re unfamiliar with it.

I started working out because of this. I listen to the deprogram while I work out and it’s pretty comforting, they usually have a positive outlook on things or at least look towards how we can make a better future. They are also just funny yk.

the general advice people have given here has been pretty good, but i want to share a couple things that have worked for me to disrupt these kinds of negative habits:

    • remove the site from your browser history so it doesn’t autocomplete in the address bar
    • log out of the site so you don’t get your “preferred” places to go recommended
    • get a browser extension to block the site as a whole or the specific features that bother you

i’m talking about trying to break a habit that you find negative in your life, and some specific things that can help with that, not saying that you should do these things on this site.

I see what you mean. I just think that if you’re not angry, you’re either not well informed or have no empathy. It sucks, I know. I don’t know how to unknow what I do. Ignorance is bliss as they say. I think it’s better to find a way to deal with it than to avoid it altogether.

to go back to the original post, where she is getting angry at zionists (presumably about the genocide israel is doing), i care much more whether you are doing anything about it than what emotions you have about it. different people work differently. i’d rather someone contribute to a local org and be ignorant of global struggles instead of spending all of their time getting angry at people online so that they contribute nothing.

Rage content is intentionally addicting like a drug, so there’s no easy way to quit. Find things you like doing better, try to use tools or things that can help you stay away from it (like a habit tracker, or digital wellness tools), and slowly over time you’ll use it less. Unsubscribing from these toxic platforms is incredibly liberating, and once you’re off them, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

I literally do the same thing, keep entering toxic comment sections on YouTube knowing that it will be toxic, keep coming back on reddit because of few good subs and then seeing bullshit by accident or by entering subs which everyone would assume are normal and then seeing bullshit. Not to mention visiting r/ShitLiberalsSay.

    Yeah I’m definetely sadomasochist.

I just activated my youtube comment blocker to avoid doing that exact thing! Some of the channels I follow have really nice comments, but pretty much any time I’m browsing outside my usual wheelhouse it goes downhill real fast.

I usually feel better if I’m building something or doing some cool things with open source software. It can be frustrating, but you can eventually have a breakthrough that is satisfying.

Place a written copy of the Phenomenology of Spirit next to your device. Now, every time you are about to open Reddit, force yourself to read a paragraph in the book beforehand. Not only will this cure your Reddit addiction, it will also bring your sleep schedule back on track

I just block or leave instances that post rage content. There are several here that I blocked because it was just all the front page. I think to instances are dangerous anyway because infiltrators and such will spam that garbage to just keep any meaningful content from showing up and all they really do is put at risk the mental health of the community when it’s ALL you see.

Other than that you just gotta not go looking for it.
