maybe the blahaj admins should just add like a brief questionaire on blahaj sign ups (at least temporarily) that need to be filled in and approved by the mods before someone can start posting here to make it harder for people to do this. maybe make it have questions like “why do you want to make an account on blahaj”, “how did you find out about blahaj”, “why did you choose your username” and “explain your views on lgbtq+ rights in two sentences or more”. It would make it way more inconvenient for spammers to repeatedly make new accounts, theyd have to come up with new answers each time, and it would make it so that spam attacks would be spread out and inneficient

Replying just to say that I agree with this. I’m in queer Discord servers with an order of magnitude less users who have similar questionnaires. The one caveat is that those servers have moderators, as well as admins, going over those answers. I think Lemmy needs to add an ‘Instance Moderator’ role that’s able to deal with things like this without having backend access.

These accounts are being manually registered. Their goal isn’t mass registration to spam multiple places, but a few targeted registrations that then spam other instances and get us defederated. They are quite happy to answer questions and do whatever needed to slip through the cracks.

Even manual account approval won’t stop them.

What should be limiting their impact is the rate limit set in the Lemmy control panel, but it’s not working.

Literally just came from a thread about a Newsweek article where some blahaj account carpet bombed everything with porn spam. It’s time to defederate. This is getting ridiculous. If the Admins over there can’t get it under control then we simply shouldn’t deal with it.

It’s not a matter of getting it “under control”. The trolls specifically create accounts with us to get us defederated, including verifying email and answering approval questions.

The thing that is meant to stop them (rate limiting) doesn’t work.

In short there is nothing we can do to get it under control short of blocking them when they slip through the cracks.

If that’s not good enough and you still want to defederate, well, that was their goal…

Lately, I’ve implemented some restrictions that should eliminate or significantly reduce the issue of outgoing spam from kbin.social. I apologize for any inconvenience and really appreciate your patience. I’m confident that both the Lemmy and kbin tools will be adjusted over time, and until then, we all need to take a deep breath and overlook certain things. Good luck with that.

Despite the teething problems, you’re doing a great job with kbin. In my mind, it’s got more potential than lemmy does!

Your initial message suggested “it’s time to defederate”. It definitely came across as you being unwilling to discuss “viable solutions” and wanting to jump straight to the nuclear option. As the OP mentioned, getting Blahaj defederated is probably the ultimate goal of this user, and user’s like them. I think you got a pretty reasonable response, all things considered. You don’t get to dial the heat up to 11 and then get upset when people respond in kind.
