Who needs to block LW when you can just be on an instance that’s 5 days behind federating with them, due to their own failure to keep their instance properly up to date.
Its up to date, they just haven’t enabled the option to actually fix the problem that came in the new update.
I think .world is a net positive to the fediverse, but its still too big.
Yeah I know that. I just didn’t think it was a detail worth getting into in a short pithy comment.
I guessed so, but I think having the option, and choosing NOT to enable it is far worse.

9 of the top 10 are LW
LW delay with Aussie.zone is now at 4 days : https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/40460535?scrollToComments=true
Wow, didn’t know about that delay and the technical reasons behind it. That’s wild!
I’m not subscribed to any of them 😎
Blocking LW is self care.

I think, for the health of the fediverse, this is a really important issue.
I see plenty of non LW instances. Its balanced fine IMO. I’d prefer to have a big instance where new users can join and see a populated active feed.
I think that is a little too agressive, my prefered way is to post to community, if it is the largest, or if the largest on lemmy.eorld, then second largest.
Lemmy.world has a lot of problems, I can’t unsee all the cracks. You may empathize with it more as that is your home instance.
lemmy.world ≠ lemmings.world
understand the confusion tho 😅
I read that username too fast haha.
Serious question: is Lemmy.world a problem if it gets big?
We want Lemmy to be successful. Users join and they’re bound to concentrate in an instance that looks like it is the biggest (that’s where I would sign up as a newbie). Other instance content still is consumable and interactable. Is this a problem?
Someone on Lemmy told me this and it really stuck with me even though I always believed it even if I couldn’t put it into words.
Having only one good solution means you’re only one good solution away from having no good solutions at all. That person wrote it more succinctly however, I’m worse at this :p
True ideally…but I would think having people on Lemmy is the main priority. Having a diversified Lemmy is secondary. If Lemmy.world pulls some shit then getting people to change instance shouldn’t be as difficult as getting people to change platform.
Lemmy competes against single solutions like Reddit. It’s still better to have an overpopulated Lemmy.world rather than Reddit.
Non-diversified Lemmy poses similar risks Reddit did even if to a lesser extent. I know we won’t stop it but people like Blaze do a great job by linking only non-LW instances when promoting Lemmy and we should all make a conscious effort to spread out as much as possible. LW will probably end up as a Reddit clone in terms of vibes based on the type of people that gravitate towards it and that’s not everyone’s cup of tea either.

I agree although I’m not sure Piefed and Mbin are mature enough for us to recommend to newbies. Piefed might get apps soon so that’s a huge a boon but Mbin seems stuck in a rut a bit.

I believe the situation on iOS is a bit worse and that’s still half of the users overall probably so probably best to check that first. Then again if I was someone older (kind of am) and heard there’s no iOS app for something I was joining I’d be worried how serious it is.
It’s just that we should avoid putting all our fruit into one basket. Lemmy.world has some problematic policies and lack of moderation on bigotry.
Yeah, because it’ll centralise the fediverse more. Although I think if Lemmy.world was bought by Elon Musk tomorrow and turned off federation, the fediverse would survive. In fact, I reckon a large amount of people would move off of Lemmy.world due to the principal of federation.
In a perfect world the lemmy communities would be neatly diversified onto the 571 instances with each holding the main 51 communities.
Me, I just got instance banned.

I was using the @ mention feature on my home instance to include a LW member in a conversation about them, as to not have it behind their back.
Weren’t they specifically requesting you to stop pinging them, and you insisted on still doing it anyway? Have to say you kinda asked for that one. Unless it’s another conversation separate from the one I saw.
It’s a feature.
You didn’t lose much as it is basically reddit-lite.
