  • I hope the state goes after them.

The current DA is pretty fucking liberal as far as DAs go.

And they are a big reason why politics in Wisconsin are so stacked in favor of Republicans. They do a lot of business here and her husband is heir to the Schlitz beer fortune. They fund a lot of the Republican state representatives campaigns.

They are also the main reason why Wisconsin is still a prohibition state in regards to marijuana. Supposedly good Christians don’t want cannabis competing with their much more destructive and addictive product.

The exact type of people Jesus was talking about in his eye of the needle parable

  • I’m sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately most of us don’t have much power individually. Finding solidarity in our communities I think is one of the most protective things we can do for ourselves, both politically and for our mental health.

I can’t really control what state actors due to Elon musk and I don’t have much say in the election. I will say that I live in a swing state and I am voting for Kamala if it helps you feel any better lol

  • I see more prison abolitionists here on lemmy then most places. And I do think it’s a problem more generally. People often want revenge and safety from people who might be violent, and we often mistake this for justice. I’m guilty of it myself, cheering over the idea of Trump going to prison for instance (revenge). But, I did time. I know Trump wouldn’t go any place that difficult, anyway. And part of me relishes in the idea of him suffering as I did. But, it’s not the way. And it’s not justice.

Restorative justice is the way, as you pointed out. And I think if we seed more of that model into the larger lemmy community, posting in larger communities like news, politics, science, etc, as well as (gently) in reply to comments like the ones you’re seeing, that people will learn and in turn spread those good ideas. The posters on lemmy are intelligent, and a lot of them do value prison abolition.

It’s fertile soil, just has a lot of weeds at the moment.

  • I don’t support Harris, but I will vote for her because Trump winning will only make things worse. And accelerate the climate catastrophe, which will hurt everyone who lives here, animals and plants too.

As far as how I will get the US to stop funding Israel… I won’t. It’s a bigger problem then myself.

But, organizing outside of the election cycle is the way to do it. Protests, strikes, not paying our taxes. Those are the ways to change things.

A third party protest vote won’t change anything. It will just get your candidate and those who voted for them blamed for spoiling a two party election and putting Trump in office.

P.S. The framing of your question sucks btw. For reasons I pointed out above (I don’t support Harris, and I don’t propose that I can do anything personally to stop the genocide outside of organizing with others. And, if Trump is elected, the genocide will accelerate and likely spread to other middle eastern countries, and everyone will be suffering greatly by 2075 due to climate change).

  • Scared people want strong leaders (a daddy) to tell them it’s okay, it’s not the climate, it’s the queers, migrants, etc. And Daddy’s going to fix it.

Blame may not be the right word. But the destruction of our environment and everything that goes with it, certainly gives authoritarianism an opening.

Judith Butler goes pretty deep into this in Who’s Afraid of Gender? Of course their analysis focuses mostly on how gender queer people end up being targeted. But the unnamed fear of climate destruction is a big factor. And trans people one of many scapegoats for power hungry demagogues.
