  • Yeah… I’m not convinced. After this election, I think the answer is less “it takes everyone” or “it takes all kinds” and more “here’s evidence there are quite a lot of people we could do without”.

Edit: and a lot of the people we can do without are ostensibly lefties. You want to call maga folks stupid for being single issue voters, then you can’t be a single issue “conscious objector”. I hope if you didn’t vote for Harris you get the rough side of the next two years for being a magnum toolbag.

Edit 2: all you .ml shitbirds can also lick an outlet as far as I’m concerned

  • How can you NOT appear to talk down to someone who is Trump vocabulary / concept or less about issues that are actually complex and nuanced? Trump can talk out of both sides of his mouth to different groups with radically conflicting messages tuned to the audience. If anyone did that while trying to cater to the left, you would be immediately strung up for being duplicitous while at the same time being excoriated for being vague and nonspecific with your plans. No “concepts of a plan” are going to fly for someone running outside the Republican party.

Trump is basically bowling with the gutter guards up and it’s because the Republican electorate is angry and not exactly… uh… discerning when it comes to complex or academic issues.

  • Wouldn’t that be great, and I hope you get the chance to vote for it if such a candidate emerges. The extra gerrymandering and crippling of voter rights or just, you know, suspension of elections between now and then may have something to say about it though.

Trump is not doing anything but saying “I’ll do this! And I’ll do that! And I’m the best at this!” And as long as he says enough bullshit all the voters say “of course he lies and says what he needs to say to get elected, but not about my thing!” Even if every week he contradicts the last thing he says.

Short memories, unsophisticated voters, and single issue voting mean this strategy will basically always work. Remember, they have voters with single issue in, and you (or at least many in this thread or on Lemmy) are single issue out. Maybe well meaning, but functionally not a particularly smarter approach to getting the best available leader. It’s all “Fuck you, me!” and take the rest of us with you.

  • Right. Need to support everyone, universal healthcare, universal basic income, without religion, no with religion, with feminism, with support for men’s rights, with support for immigration, not too much support for immigration, with support for small businesses, without enabling corporate America, and ranked choice voting, and younger people, more minorities, elect a woman, with more communism, no, more socialism, with consequences for the right, with unity for all and put the past behind us etc etc etc.

We get Trump because some entitled fuckers from every. single. camp. (often with conflicting interests) say “earn MY vote” or go to hell. The straight white cis bible thumping camp is voting as a bloc all the time. This is why D can’t get anything done: there is no sparkling unicorn candidate. Sometimes a little better is all you get. Lefties complain about people on the right being single issue voters, then turn around and single issue don’t vote.

Thanks for the nut punch of a president.

None of it should factor. At all.

The distinction between the candidates was clear enough:

    1. I will lower your taxes (for billionaires), I don’t like immigrants, and I will say all the stuff you think and the lefties made it bad to say. Also if I don’t win I’m going to jail because, for enough money I will do whatever you want (for Russia, Elon, or anyone else).

    2. I am an actual qualified candidate.

There was no choice. It was taxes and fear and tribalism with a special sprinkle of election interference attempts around the horn.

She was appointed? So what? Elect her because she’s a better choice, then fix that problem.

  • No offence taken in any way. Nicely written.

You are right that to be able to have specific, nuanced discussion and move minority positions to equal footing there is often a need for a new lexicon “Carnist” in particular makes it sound to me like there are vegans, and there are people whose entire life is meat. To me, it’s a laughable turn of phrase.

With respect to communities and subs, I don’t think that it’s so cut and dry as “most people aren’t vegans, so they necessarily don’t like where vegans congregate”. That is a little bit reductionist. I suppose you weren’t here to see it happen, but this vegan sub basically crapped it’s pants because of one power tripping exmod until the technician came and took it over (which may have started with this post actually). As that was happening, the most active users were suggesting jumping to .ml instances and to go to vegantheoryclub which self advertises as anarchy-forward (fine). MAYBE because people like me browse “all” instead of my subs most of the time, being in the main stream leads to too many downvotes to combative–but in group–content for comfort. Even still, maybe we don’t have to go hang out with tankies?

As to vegan theory club, I visited several posts to have sane and rational discourse only to have my comments immediately deleted. As I recall, these were not short or offhand dismissive comments but actual attempts to engage. Comments deleted, users banned, and Hamid specifically doing it as the instance admin and leaving “fuck america” footprints. Suffice it to say that it really chapped my ass, and as an American looking down the barrel of another Trump term, I don’t like Americans that much either. Between him, beaver, and some other high activity accounts, it is mostly not worth the effort to try to break into these communities.

Considering deer hunting, yes the comments were flippant and I deleted all that yesterday. Still though, where I live hunting is the only population control for deer besides overcrowding and disease. It saves me buying beef, and I assume is a much better way to go than a wasting disease or a high speed encounter with a car.
