  • I’ve liked my thermal tights from 2XU. Had them since 2014, and used in negative Cs (maybe down to -5C?). Feels very chilly when you first go out, but then gets quite comfortable once you get running.

I can’t run outside myself until Spring now myself - suffering from runner’s knee now and slowly recovering, but it can still start hurting in the middle of a run. Having to stop to walk back in the middle of a run is not ideal when it’s cold outside and you are dressed for running and not walking.

  • I run Calyx on a Fairphone 4. I am very satisfied with it. I have a single app that breaks (a banking app - doesn’t pass SafetyNet I presume, but I don’t get any help understanding the problem other than a generic “Something went wrong” error). All other Google Play apps I have installed has worked, and have been installed through Aurora Store. This has had some ups and downs in terms of performance - there was an issue some time back where their accounts were rate limited to the point the store was unusable for some time. So if you are very dependent on accessing Google Play store, you should keep that in mind. I try to find FOSS apps I get through F-Droid when I can and only use apps from Google Play when I have no other choice. Mind you, I have not logged in to a Google account to access any paid apps through the Play Store, so I don’t know how well that works.

Android Auto I don’t think you will get to work though.

  • I tried something similarily, although I stopped when there was some filtering rules I couldn’t figure out. This thread has inspired me to take that up again.

Main advantages of this I would say:

    1. No endless scrolling as you say
    2. No cheap tricks (blinking red capital letters screaming BREAKING NEWS at you)
    3. No falling for the headline switcheroo - you see each article once. You might miss some updates in an article, but they are usually minor and when something big happens it tends to generate many articles anyway. If it’s really important, you will see it.
    4. Certain RSS clients (like Fluent Reader) allow you to view articles in app, which allows you to skip visiting the newsite altogether. Doesn’t work with paywalls, though.
