Well yeah. It makes sense when you remember that these people buy that bad things happen because God is unhappy with us. The economy is suffering, because we let drag queens read to children, and that offends God. It’s just the same magical thinking as followers of Apollo trying to appease their god. Well there were outbreaks before. They were handled by the people that are supposed to handle it. Covid… Well the people that are supposed to handle it were fired and and the administration in charge thought a pandemic would be good to thin out the city voters block.

Something definitely happened in the 70s. The civil rights movement of the 60s, seemed to spark a principal skinner moment. Plus Watergate and push back against Vietnam. “Could we be out of touch? No it’s the children”
Communism’s boogeyman effect was wearing off, and the conservatives needed some new material. Racism is always a good lever. So you get the southern strategy, Powell memorandum, Heritage Foundation, and the seeds for what will become Fox News.
I think there’s a good argument for the early 70s as a starting point.
