Another name for the NATO alphabet is the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet or “standard phonetics,” and as its name implies it is the standard alphabet for spelling out words via two-way radio. Pilots, mariners, first responders, soldiers, and amateur radio operators around the world all use this alphabet. It’s cool to learn because of how many people understand it.
However, it isn’t going away, even if NATO collapses.
