I think this is one possible outcome that no-one seems to be talking about
The US might ruin XHS by using a bot/troll army to spur conflict and hate there. The US DoD has admitted to launching a disinformation campaign using hundreds of fake accounts to discredit Sinovac. So it won’t be surprising if they try a similar tactic of using bots and fake accounts in XHS especially since there would be fewer qualms.
This is short, but I’m just sharing my concerns…
China, is if anything, extremely proactive on these matters. At least on matters of fitness they take precautions to protect their people that might seem Draconian in the West, snorting or dry dosing creatinine or pre workout powder is banned even if accompanied by a disclaimer that it isn’t a narcotic, no syringes or pills can be present in any image with a fitness influencer (even if they are promoting products delivered in that way), celebration of extreme dieting (pinching the skin around the belly button or jawline to show no fat, the “skull face” etc.) needs a disclaimer about how “contest prep” is an extreme 6 week process done by professionals and only usually once or twice a year.
I’m certain it won’t be as easy to poison the well as some might think.
This is amazing, actually. It’s almost like having a single party dedicated to solving social issues has its benefits
Considering the rate that the app is improving to moderate and translate content, I would venture to bet that they’ll move to moderate the content like that quickly. Wouldn’t put it past the US government to try it though.
The reason the US is able to do this sort of shit in countries like the Philippines is due to the fact that they use US platforms. This sort of tactic can be quickly nipped in the bud when there’s actual moderation happening. China has a lot of experience in this area as well. This is precisely why the US is freaking out over TikTok right now, they can’t control the narrative there, and they won’t be able to do that on XHS either.
I didn’t even know that r/Philippines has a lot of Western-backed assets.
They could try, but they don’t have control over the app in the same way that they do with empire ones, so they’ll be fighting with whatever measures are put in place to stop it. Which is part of the reason we got to this point in the first place, that they don’t have control over TikTok. I fully expect the empire to try to fight dirty in whatever way it can come up with, it’s been fighting dirty for decades (hundreds of years if you consider the empire to include British colonialism and others). But wanting to make something happen and having the means to do it aren’t always the same thing.
So be wary, certainly, but keep the logistics of things in view too. The logistics can be more telling about what may be attempted and how it may be attempted than what is desired to happen. The colonial/imperial orgs of the world have had a certain understanding of this historically; it’s why you can find writing with the CIA calling Stalin a captain of a team rather than a dictator. Though at this point, they may be believing their own lies more, I don’t know. Either way, whether making ineffectual attempts that ignore logistics, or making attempts that contend with the realities, Red Note / XHS is not exposed to their predation in the same way that it is with western apps.
Oh yeah, that Vaccine misinformation one was the recent one that was publicly acknowledged, so there could be a lot of other bot/trolls armies we don’t know about :(
Supposedly 小紅書 banned Nick Fuentes because he racked up thousands of followers with no content posted, so I’m hopeful. China does not play around.
The empire is just so fucking evil. Like they could have competed to provide vaccines if they really wanted to counter China or whatever these racial supremacists want. They chose the evil method. The sad part of this is, a lot of people will look at this, even in the Phillipines itself and think it just.
Holy fuck, the more I read in to the bot campaign, the more infuriated and horrified I get
“As it relates to Covid-19 disinformation, China [in 2020] initiated a disinformation campaign to falsely blame the United States for the spread of Covid-19,” Lawrence noted. “In line with the US National Defense Strategy, the DoD continues to build integrated deterrence against critical challenges to US national security, including deterring the PRC’s spread of disinformation under the scrutiny of the Department’s coordination and deconfliction process,” she said.
They are literally using “Whataboutism”, except spreading vaccine denial actually gets people KILLED.
According to the document, the Pentagon also conceded it had “made some missteps in our COVID related messaging” but assured the Philippines that the military “has vastly improved oversight and accountability of information operations” since 2022.
Oops-poopsies, we promise we won’t cause suffering and death the next time we deploy our bot army because we’re “Transparent” and “Accountable” (especially after we allotted 1.6 Billion dollars to badmouth China) Tee-hee-hee
Who gives a flying fuck about “spooky wumaos” when the US bot army actually got people KILLED
And they will do it again too. Some ghouls are beyond redemption. Imagine working on something like this and not thinking to yourself, “like wtf am I even doing?”
