Peertube for sure. Seems to work great whenever I try it, but I’m not a political extremist or European so most of the instances I’ve come across aren’t interesting to me. I would recommend starting your own instance, but also YouTube is YouTube because they actually pay creators if that’s something you’re looking for.

I’m really curious to see if any of these options can pan out long-term. It’s extremely expensive to host video, and it seems like it could be a real challenge for federated video hosting to take off at scale. I’m hopeful!

Peertube has been around for a while, but indeed many instances aren’t open for registration and many disappeared at a point.

In theory the bittorent behind it is well scalable, not sure how it works practically

Peertube is based on the Activitypub protocol and can federate with other instances just like Lemmy/Mastodon. Odysee is a decentralized blockchain-based video-sharing platform.

If you’d like to monetize your content, Odysee would be the better option due to its own cryptocurrency for tipping. I personally like Peertube more, as I think it is better moderated against right-wing content.

I would say PeerTube looks like the best alternative to YouTube. I haven’t explored it personally but it is on my to-do list along with standing up a Friendica instance. I’ve been off of Facebook since 2017. I’ve been off of Twitter since November of 2022.
