This may be a function of Lemmy rather than wefwef (in which case, my apologies but here we go…)

If I filter to ‘All’ (ie. Entire Lemmy fediverse) and then sort by ‘Hot’ then I see pages and pages of posts with only say 4 upvotes and zero comments.

These can’t be the hottest posts across the entire fediverse. What am I missing here?

It’s definitely a Lemmy issue. I’ve been jumping between apps to test them out (wefwef, LiftOff, and Memmy) and they all show the same posts for All/Hot. Active is a bit better, but since it opens the time range to a couple days, a lot of stale posts show up. Hot is just polluted with “spammy” posts by bots, so ended up sticking with Active until the Hot algorithm is sorted out.

I think I read yesterday that this is a problem with Lemmy itself. I can’t confirm though, and I don’t remember where I saw that.

I changed my sort to top 6 hour and it has made things better as a lurker/consumer.

This is a Lemmy / activityPub issue I think

It’s the way activity is determined for rising posts.

It’s not good. The devs will probably address it
