Amazon says it has been given approval from regulators to fly drones farther and deliver goods to more customers.

The company says the Federal Aviation Administration has given it permission to operate its drones beyond the sight on its operator, allowing the expansion of drone delivery.

The company says it has developed a system to allow the drone to detect and avoid other things in the air to improve safety.

Not sure if I would like my deliveries to be dropped off mid-air like the picture shows. Good thing this is US-only (for now).

If it’s the drop that’s the problem: the package will see similar action in traditional parcel transportation

BTW how do drone deliveries work when routing to apartment blocks?

In case of house, there are singular front doors/curb/driveway/whatever. At least in Poland, there are apartment blocks with >10 staircases, each guard finite subset of apartments, like staircase 5 has apartments 65-81. Which apartment belongs to which starcase, you can learn only by going to the block, or knowing in advance.

Then, people are coming and going in/out all the time Good luck if package is not stolen or damaged Or do you run to pick it :p

IIRC, in the original showoff years ago, it would just deliver to a common area that you can walk to to pick it up.

In the event that you’re not home to pick it up, I would hope there is some sort of scheduling option?

A small drone like this will make home deliveries even more ecologically advantageous, far better than combustion engines or 3 ton electric vehicles

Drones are loud as fuck and have a host of other issues. People will fucking riot if they have to start listening to drones fly around all day.

An eco friendly option that actually makes sense is cargo bikes. Even land based drone delivery makes more sense than flying drones. This shit is probably never happening.

The plane drones are quieter aren’t they?

Also cars are noisy as fuck and everyone acts like that are perfect in every way.

Nobody said drones gotta fly. It could be a mass of automated bikes running around every available inch of asphalt trying desperately to deliver their cargo so they can go back to the charging station.

Drone operators will be allowed to fly drones beyond where they can see them

            From the article

Why? This is actually kinda cool. I am just sitting here wishing I could order cannabis and Soylent and have it be brought to me via drone.

It was what the founding fathers would have wanted!
