I put this on the other day not really knowing what it was and I loved every second of it.

The 1970s Los Angeles vibe was perfect. The plot was unpredictable and chaotic but it made sense from the point of view of the main characters. Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, and the teenage girl were all excellent together. There were so many intricately set up punchlines through out the movie. I had no idea Ryan Gosling could be so funny.
One of my favorite lines was probably when March (Gosling) was interacting with his daughters friend Janet.
Janet: “You took the Lords name in vain!”
March: “No I didn’t Janet. I found it very useful actually. OK, Janet?”
Also the whole set up and pay off with the dream sequence and Healy’s (Crowe) ankle gun was hilarious.
What are your thoughts on this movie? Do you recommend any more movies like this?
It’s a really fun movie imo. I can’t even think of anything to criticise, it was just solid from start to finish.
If you haven’t seen it already, Hot Fuzz (2007) has some similarities, including the buddy dynamic. It’s also a great flick.
Oh yes I agree. Hot Fuzz is pretty similar in style. Love that one too
Another one that just came to mind: Dead Heat (1988). Kinda cheesy and maybe not as comedy-heavy but still a very enjoyable movie.
Nice Guys is a great rehash of Black’s earlier film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Ooo thanks! I haven’t seen this one
Both this and the Hitman’s Bodyguard are tremendous fun. Well worth watching.
Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is terrible and yet somehow still fun to watch.
I also suggest Bullet Train. I’d watch a film with just Tangerine and Lemon.
Thanks for the suggestions! Those all sound worth a watch to me
I do mean it on Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, it’s really NOT a good movie, but everyone making it had so much fun and that just soaks right through the screen.
Great movie, and sharply written too. The bit where they try to surreptitiously dump a body over a ledge, only to have it land in the middle of a group of party goers, had me crying with laughter the first time I saw it.
Right! So many great moments.
spoiler When they are in the middle of a gun fight with the hitman and Healy jumps through the window to get inside the house then March tosses him a gun and it flies right over his head and out the window. :::
I mean, if you want recommendations for other movies like this then you should probably check out Shane Black’s very similar precursor called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Thanks! Others have said this same thing. I will definitely check it out.
Some great lines in this film. Perhaps my favourite is

Holland March: “Sweetheart, how many times have I told you? Don’t say ‘and stuff’. Just say ‘dad, there are whores here’”.
So many great lines and subtle jokes throughout this.
spoiler girl at party: "All I told him was that if you want me to do that, the don't eat the asparagus."
I feel like there was someone posting about this movie recently and how they didn’t enjoy it. Something about they turned to each other in the middle of the movie and talked about how they didn’t like any of the characters and then just turned it off.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Do you mean just use that banner as a line of text? Or is that like a thing that hides the text until it’s selected?

It is, thanks!
Really like this one, nothing comes to mind for a recommendation though.
Right that’s why I asked if anyone had any recommendations. I think it’s pretty unique. Like it’s basically a buddy-cop movie but it’s not like any other buddy-cop movies I’ve seen.
Some of the comedy reminds me of Mel Brooks with the elaborate set ups, absurdist situations, and stuff. But it doesn’t feel like it’s copying anything.
Shane Black is always a good time. Nice Guys is definitely one of his best.
I enjoyed it for all the reasons I thought I would, but I definitely did not expect the whole thing to centre on a very real crime. That definitely caught me off guard in a good way.
I watched this for the first time the other day and was shocked they didn’t make more (particularly as I’d noticed some other The Nice Guys titles in imdb but they’re all shorts or what would have been DVD extras once upon a time). Given that this was initially developed as a series, I’m sure they have more stories to tell, It’s a real shame.
I hate seeing new IPs not get traction as it just leads execs to churn out more of the same old remakes and repeats.
Midnight Run is a classic late 80s buddy film, albeit with bounty hunters instead of detectives.
The Kid Detective is another detective dark comedy.
Thanks! I don’t know either of these. Added both to my watchlist
The Kid Detective is great! The revelation at the end that significantly changes the tone works surprisingly well, IMO.
I just remember it being very good. Now I will have to watch it again…
I saw this movie well after it was released. It was fantastic complete caught me off guard. I though it was a straight forward comedy but it was really deep and very much like the directors eailer film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
I’m definitely going to have to watch kiss kiss bang bang
While not 100% the same, I would recommend The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
