What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I’m not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

Zero. In my car… still zero.

I have a 90-minute drive to work because moving to walkable range would be too expensive.

The houses near my office start around 4-5 million dollars. Apartments within walking distance cost $3,000/month for 600 square feet.

I work for a small city that’s an enclave for the super-wealthy near a much larger city. It’s small enough that I can’t say where without essentially nailing down my identity. There are fewer than a dozen employees for the city.

Suffice to say things are ludicrously expensive there. The people moving in are buying 3 million dollar houses just to tear them down and build a 15 million dollar house. These people really don’t live in the same world as the rest of us. We don’t have a modern building code, but we’ve have an ordinance regarding the design of servant’s quarters.
