I still remember watching an interview with him only after watching the entire series and how mind blowing it was to me that he was English.
He was quite well known in England. Fry and Laurie, Blackadder, etc.
The one that gets me is Dominic West. I saw him in The Wire first, and every time after I’m like “that’s a decent English accent he’s doing there. Oh wait.”
I suspect I’m going to be the same with Shiv and Tom from Succession.
Wasn’t he well known in the US before House? I mean… Blackadder?
Nah, blackadder didn’t really reach household name status here. About the only british shows that’re at that level are dr who and Monty Python. Fawlty towers, abfab, red dwarf, blackadder and others tend to be more niche. Hell, we had versions of shameless, the office, and queer as folk, and people don’t really realize they are copies (with varying degrees of similarity to the originals).
I can’t recall if blackadder was even on BBC America or not, but I don’t recall seeing it on there back when we had cable.
I think PBS, or some channel ( Maybe TCM? Can’t remember.) would show it along with the others and Are You Being Served. My grandfather and I used to watch them together all time.
shamless
As a proud Mancunian I refuse to watch the US version. You can’t take Manchester out of Shameless!! Pretty much all the characters in Shameless go one-for-one to members of my family.
I’ve heard that before.
Tbh though, I was super doubtful I would like it at all, having loved the original. And the US version did lose some in translation. But it was, until the last season or so, a good show on its own, despite being not the same thing at heart. I don’t think a show line the US shameless would translate well if it had been the original, though. Both are pretty vivid snapshots of the places they’re set in, which is the way that the US version succeeded. You ever meet people from that area, you’ll hear stories like on the show.
I’ve got family up there in middle yankee land that aren’t so far off from some of the American Frank’ kids.
Not gonna lie though, the original did make me decide to make sure I was never, ever gong to go to Manchester lol.
Jeeves and Wooster ftw
Fry and Laurie is good too
I had heard/read that his commitment to the cain limp walk fucked up his gait in real life and caused him some issues lol. How awful
You are a black man.
I rewatched recently and while there is a lot that’s dated as hell the show in general does hold up
The whole show outside of the barely plausible medical drama is about how awful House is as a human.
At every opportunity they go out of their way to spell out how horrible he is. He’s an egomaniacal drug addict with daddy issues and a borderline pedophile.
The most fun thing watching the show is counting the number of crimes he commits an episode.
If I had to choose between you and House though… Sorry bro, it’s entertaining TV.
I’m not saying it’s a bad show, quite the opposite.
People who don’t grasp that he’s a terrible person but a great character just annoy me.
Probably the same people who look up to Rick Sanchez.
Is rare that he’s not used in memes as the Joker, American Psycho or the guy from picky blinders.
Pedophile??
There’s an episode where a teenage girl is into him and he is quite obviously interested.
Other characters “get in the way” and stop him from doing anything but the intent was there.
Well she was a 17 year old, dressed as an adult and was trying to seduce house. And house does the right thing by diagnosing her instead of taking advantage of her.
Im not interested in quibbling over details, she was clearly represented as being under age and all parties knew it.
House does the right thing only after being whipped by Cutty.
Edit: Im not shocked that Lemmy is sadly full of pedo apologists
No, you are just over eager to slap the pedo label on someone even when people are explaining why it isn’t correct.
House was clearly just messing with everybody. He repeatedly rebuffs her advances. The only part properly creepy is the scene in the parking lot when the girl is leaving and has her jeans so low that her underwear is exposed and house openly leers at that. The rest of it is him just being flattered.
A far more better example of pedo like behaviour is the episode where they treat the teenage supermodel
House does the right thing only after being whipped by Cutty.
Ehh he was already sort of aware when she asks why him why he thinks she likes him.
The gist of that episode was more that House was curious as to why she took a liking to him and knew that it’d push everyone’s buttons so he let her.
I haven’t seen all the episodes but I think the underlying point was he is an asshole with actual good intentions underneath. Like he doesn’t care about the BS of being friendly, he just wants to get down to business of helping people.
It wasn’t about helping people, it was about finding the solution to puzzles and proving that his solution was right. If that just happened to involve helping people, so be it.
No there are times he has genuinely helped people for no other reason than it was the right thing to do. Wilson puts it best when he says house is an asshole but a noble one
What are some things you’d call dated? Genuine curiosity, it’s been a while since I saw some episodes.
I’d just say the general outlook of the show is a very white male point of view. It’s still a good show but you can tell it was made in a specific period because of the conversations
The main character is a white male…why wouldn’t it strongly feature his point of view?
Not at all what I meant. All of the characters regardless of their gender or ethnicity are coming from that point of view. Again still a good show and I am a white male but it’s a bit tone deaf on some things I would expect someone as smart as House to be aware of, and they likely would’ve included that were the show made today and not 2003
Huh. Cutty and foreman in particular really openly disagree with…almost everything house opines on, and call him out often. Infact even other white males like Wilson are pretty clear they find his speech and actions inappropriate
Edit: did I lie?
And yet House keeps his job and continues practicing despite his constant extremely inappropriate conduct.
“You’re fired for inappropriate medical conduct, illegal activity (breaking and entering, etc.), substance abuse, harassment, and littering.”
Show ends after the pilot episode. Is that what you’re looking for?
The cell phones are pretty ancient flippers.
“what’s this ih-pod?” Always gets a guffaw out of me
I stopped watching it cause I just couldn’t stand House, who is never allowed to experience the consequences of his behaviour because he’s just so amazing and special and always right that they can’t afford to lose him, because of course no other doctors in the entire city can hold a candle to this one emotionally stunted asshole. I remember the extremely acephobic episode which was not my favourite thing to see as someone who is asexual 🙃. That was definitely the last straw for me.
Your head is in the sand if you haven’t experienced people good at their craft being treated specially in their professional environment, and holding it like a crown, or that you think good doctors are easily replaceable.
i think he’s just saying he doesnt enjoy watching a show with a main character that has a personality he doesnt enjoy. which is valid
There’s a difference between being treated specially and having complete immunity, and I think you’re a bit naive if you think talent alone is enough to protect someone’s job even in the medical field. And yes, one singular talented doctor who makes 5 new enemies every time he opens his mouth would absolutely be replaceable. Do some people get treated specially in their jobs? Sure, though it’s usually because of who they’re friends with or who they’re related to rather than their talent. But to the degree that House gets away with? He takes it to a cartoonish degree that would lead to so many lawsuits Cuddy’s head would spin. Do you know how much hospital deans care about the reputation of their hospital? And no, House’s success rate wouldn’t prevent his patients from pursuing legal battles or tanking the hospital’s reputation. House’s behaviour would make him an active liability which would cancel out any benefits to gain from his talent and he wouldn’t be worth giving any special treatment. But that’s beside the point, I personally couldn’t stand his guts and disliked how he never suffered any real consequences for his actions and that’s why I stopped watching.
I’ve resisted adopting the phrase out of pocket, but it actually is perfectly reasonable to use here. What the fuck, Greg?
Did he pay for expenses out of his own money? Is he away from his usual station? I have a feeling this means I’m old.
Let’s just repurpose existing phrases, nobody can stop us. House sure is watching the bottom line, huh?
“Out of pocket” meaning unruly, inappropriate, or out of control appears to have usage at least as far back as the 1940s.
In what of part of the English speaking world is this phrase used this way. I’ve only ever understood “out of pocket” to mean, to use immediately available resources to pay for something.
Can you provide a source?
https://archive.org/details/cassellsdictiona00gree/page/884/mode/2up I’ve seen several sources pointing to this particular dictionary, but I’m not familiar enough with Internet archive lending to pull the specific page. I also haven’t found any primary sources from that time period to correlate.
Its much more recent, but 50 Cent used it in a number of songs, including 2005’s “in my hood”
Sheeit, bitch get out of pocket, she need some discipline
Sorry, the claim that “out of pocket” has this alternate, non-financial definition going back to the 1940s is entirely unsupported.
There are four references to “out of pocket” in the book, according to Google Books. All of them have to do with money. https://books.google.com/books/about/Cassell_s_Dictionary_of_Slang.html?id=5GpLcC4a5fAC
If you look at the 50 Cent lyrics in context, they’re saying that crack money has slowed down, so the “bitch” is paying out of pocket. https://genius.com/50-cent-in-my-hood-lyrics
Crack money slow so you know niggas is trippin’ (Yea!)
Shorty down there on that Queens tracks takin a whippin’
Sheeit, bitch get out of pocket, she need some discipline
Peep the fiend shootin diesel in his arm in the alley
Edit: on reflection, I’m not sure I understand the lyrics well enough to say which way he means “out of pocket” to be taken.
House prescribed cigarettes to Santa for the squirts. Miss that show.
And here is how he learned about the benefits of cigarettes: https://youtu.be/XewVicFzRxw
“Too much of everything is bad for you. That’s what ‘too much’ means.” is one of my favorite quotes of all time.
God I miss House
I miss Lisa Edelstein’s cleavage
Did you enjoy Omar Epps’?
That stripper scene… Good glory.
