The wefwef app has done a great job of recreating the Apollo experience and has made it a lot easier to not want to go and download the Reddit app. The more active it gets here, the easier it’ll be. How are you guys doing so far? Have you found an App for Lemmy that you prefer the most yet?
Still trying to find my footings. The thing I miss most is active engagement. The comment sections sometimes feel so empty. But I will give it time. All in all, I find the experience better than I anticipated. Using wefwef on my phone and the instance-site on my desktop and laptop. I am sure a decent app will be developed in time.
I’m very happy this space is flourishing. Lots of organic conversation and increased engagement. My only hope is that this revolt against corporate social media will be sustained. I would love to see this turn in to an existential threat to the companies selling our data and privacy to the highest-bidding advertiser.
Mlem and Memmy are quite tolerable
Hello fell Reddit Refugees! Yeah I’ve been a near daily reddit user on Sync for Reddit (Sync Pro) since 2014 or so. Now leading up to the API shutdown I was using reddit about once a week and you already know I had to use Sync one last time on the final day, but
I’ve mostly been using Lemmy for about two weeks now. I’ve tried a lot of apps (Jeroba, Thunder, Liftoff), but ultimately I also ended up on wefwef. It’s seems to be the one of snappier ones so far. It’s super strange because since it is themed after Apollo, it looks like I have an iPhone app on my Android! I know that when Sync for Lemmy comes out (about six weeks I think) I’ll jump ship immediately, but for now I’m really liking wefwef.
I’ve made it my mission to lurk less on Lemmy then I did on Reddit so I can try and help the platform succeed with some small amounts of content that I can contribute. Recently I’ve been very interested in AI image generation, so I made a community centered around that. I also made a community centered around video game giveaways to hopefully share more wholesome content on the platform. Overall, I’m hoping that since Lemmy is so new that all of us can take some control in steering it in an overall better direction than Reddit. I’m personally on team No Karma, since I think it makes Lemmy a lot less toxic and a lot less about having something to brag about and more about being something to be proud of.

It is quite sad and yet at the same time also an exciting time. I was on Reddit for 9 years and it has kind of become the internet for me.
I myself was 99% only a passive user, so I have contributed nothing to the value of the site. But the site itself had a lot to offer for me.
But I also realized that Reddit, the platform itself, hardly provides anything relevant.
I probably would never have used Reddit much without a 3rd party app, I also use it exclusively on mobile.
For me, the value of the site comes exclusively from the content, i.e. the community. And fortunately, that’s something Reddit has no direct control over.
I realize, of course, that not everyone will be here now in 6 months instead of on Reddit, but it doesnt matter.
I think the majority of users are like me rather passive, but more important are the active users of the community.
It is much more important to have these pillars of the community on board, as they will sooner or later ensure that something new is created that will then attract the larger number of passive users.
And I think it’s this usergroup that has angered Reddit for the most part. These are power users who probably all use 3rd party apps.
Nevertheless, many will of course stay, if you have put a lot of work and heart and soul into building up your community/subreddit for years, letting go is of course much harder than for someone like me.
Yep 10 years of rif for me. I found towards the end it was getting pretty stagnant. Its exciting to see something new growing in real time. All aboard the fediverse express.
Not only something new, but also something that everyone in the community is excited about and have a vested interest in.
I knew I had an issue with the amount of time I spent on Reddit.
But good lord the repeated opening of Reddit Sync to no avail over the past days really driven home just how much I just defaulted to Reddit in any dead time.
I’m loving the fediverse. I have to thank Reddit to make me discovering it!
It’ll be nice if more and more migrate over.
There’s something amusing about opening up what’s almost a Reddit clone a day after and seeing content and subs that would have been exactly like it was on Reddit here instead.
As long as momentum continues, we may see more and more leaving Reddit for what’s nearly the same thing with a lot less BS.
I just hope Lemmy servers and infrastructure can handle the growing popularity, especially once there’s popular native clients that switch from Reddit to it.
Would be very happy if spez ends up having killed his own platform in future retrospection though.

Yeah Lemmy seems the way forward. It just sucks for all the subs that won’t be making it here anytime soon. Niche subs I’m following for example, I’ll still have to rely on Reddit.
There’s definitely a period of transition. I didn’t expect to completely jump ship since I replied so heavily on reddit for community information and general news. However Lemmy does look really promising.
It does actually. I’m creating a community for one of the subreddits I was a part of, hopefully more people will join and fully migrate from Reddit.
It’s heroes like you that make it all possible. Not everyone has the time or ability to moderate a new community, but it’s great that those that do take initiative to do so. Once the community exists at all, it’s much easier for others to start posting, which gets the ball rolling. There isn’t any silver on this site to give but here, have a Lemmy Lemon 🍋

But I’m going to see if I can rebuild it here. I think Reddit has basically committed suicide.
Honestly, I’m pretty excited about being a “pioneer” (sorry to those who have been here for longer). I never commented much on Reddit, but plan to contribute more here.
I’m making an active effort to comment here more. I feel like that’s the case with a ton of people who are here now and that’s why the community seems so awesome.
I’d love to comment more but I’m still so confused. People keep talking about all these other apps and here I am just typing lemmy.world into my chrome browser on my phone. I’ve never felt more old. I’ve read every how-to I can find and I think I need to just come to terms with being old. 🥲
Hey! You made it here and you’re posting comments Lol. You already jumped the biggest hurdle and got signed up. If you didn’t want to try another app but wanted a cleaner interface, put wefwef.app into your phones browser and log in with that. But even just using it how you are is fine! That’s the great thing about this, we can all use different apps and still reach the same place.
Thanks so much! That’s reassuring. I am still a little confused about all the apps and widgets that are being discussed and/or recommended, but everyone has been so helpful, I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it eventually.
Give it a few months, when more apps are released and more people join/add more content. Lemmy is one thing, but having an app that can show Lemmy in a more simple way for new users, will help a lot. So far, we have a bunch of apps that do the same thing in different ways, you just have to choose which one fits your style.

If you want to try an easy solution, WefWef is a webapp that can be used from a browser or installed as a PWA and takes many queues from the popular (now defunct) Apollo Reddit app.
Many proper third party apps are in development, with some of them having early releases available already. There is a list here where you can explore and keep track of them.

Lemmy also has an API that clients can get information/content from. The Web frontend (lemmy.world) is one of them. Apps like wefwef and Jerboa also ask the Lemmy API for content and display it in their own way.

That’s the second time this site or someone on it has prompted me to make another account somewhere else (the first was mastodon,) and I’m not really grasping why. I understand the “login for secure communications” part, but not how all these apps/websites work together and which ones I need. I signed up for Mastodon but it’s like a 3rd party app for Twitter and that has me extra confused.
Element is a client for Matrix, a decentralized chat protocol featuring end-to-end-encryption. Lemmy seems to support DMs over the Matrix Chat protocol. Matrix is federated, so user1@matrix.org can talk to user2@matrixinstance.space.
Some fediverse apps can work together seamlessly, some can’t, and support seems to be growing over time. E. g. Mastodon users can comment on PeerTube, but Lemmy users can’t (not that I know of), but it’s not impossible that will change in the future. But, kbin for example integrates seamlessly into Lemmy.
If the mobile website fine for you, you don’t need to get an app. I used the mobile website in my phone’s browser with no problem for a few days before I started trying out apps out of curiosity. So far, I’ve settled on the Liftoff app, but again having an app isn’t necessary because of how well the mobile website works. I’m not someone who needs an app for everything and I prefer it when mobile websites are useable. Reddit made me angry when they made their mobile website annoying to use by trying to force people onto their app. I used a 3rd-party app instead, but now that’s going away so here I am on Lemmy.
If you don’t want to bother with Lemmy apps, you can create a shortcut to Lemmy.world on your phone’s home screen which can make it faster to open up Lemmy as if you were using an app. Since you’re using Chrome, I’m assuming you’re on Android, so here are some instructions if you want to add the shortcut.

The other way to do it is just to go to Communities at the top of your instance and use the search box to search for the community name. Make sure to select All under List of Communities so that the results include communities on other instances. When the community comes up in the results, you’ll be able to go to it and interact with it on your account. Just look to make sure it’s right instance as we do have some duplicate communities in the Fediverse across different instances. Like if you search Android in the Communities search box with All selected, we currently have 3 communities that are /c/Android but on 3 different instances: lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, and Lemdro.id. But if you search Lemdroid, there’s only one community and that’s on Lemdro.id.
Also I don’t know if you’ve seen this image which helped me understand more how Lemmy works: The Fediverse for Reddit Refugees. It goes over with pictures how to search for Lemmy communities.
same here, tbh. lemmy’s no-nonsense ui works great on a phone, and with modern ui design that’s actually expected behavior. so many sites intentionally break their mobile site to push people toward apps but that doesn’t mean the browser should be useless on mobile.
That’s so true! I guess I’ve kinda forgotten the days when I used reddit on my desktop browser. I used rif and other apps for so long, being back in my browser feels foreign again.

14 year club. Also not going back to mobile browsing Reddit. I was a baconreader user for more than a decade. RES and old.reddit seems unaffected so far but Connect for Lemmy is working well. Happy to see some traction here.
Wiped my 13 year account a few days ago and haven’t gone back to Reddit since RIF died. I’m mostly just waiting for one of the apps (Sync or Boost for Lemmy) to come out to do a full replacement; for now I’m just mobile browsing here.
11 years. End of an era. I have to force myself to not muscle memory go to reddit every morning when I open up my laptop in bed (I was almost purely a PC based, old.reddit.com user). It’s weird. I kinda figured my outlook or general mental space would feel…different, without using that addictive website that I’ve literally spent several hours on every single day for literally years, but I don’t. I just seem to be watching more youtube videos. I guess it’s true that your brain finds a way of filling the hole with stimulation. Not sure if that’s a good thing, though. Kinda wish my brain would be like “okay, time to read all those books you bought and then said you’d get to later. Later is now, asshole.” Nope, just twitch streamer highlight reels and videos of anime girls dancing. Maybe I’m just a fucking idiot, after all.
95% of posts that contain active discussion and more than 3 comments are about Lemmy and/or Reddit implosion. I would love to see a pivot to more engagement in other subjects. I do enjoy reading about lemmy and participating in the discussion, but would be good to see the users disperse a little bit :)
