  • As I stated during my Joint Address to the Congress last month, my message to every American child is simple: you are perfect exactly the way God made you,” reads Trump’s statement.

The implication is that God didn’t make anyone gay, trans, non-binary, etc., and if any minor claims to be naturally the way they feel they are, MAGA fascists will step in to correct them with God on their side. They will tell themselves they’re doing a good thing. That’s how the original Nazis lived with working in concentration camps committing mass murder too, and like MAGA fascists they also considered themselves good Christians.

  • The controversy began when restaurant owners Darwell and Nettie Mechelle Yeager posted a video promoting a limited-time discount for “real couples only”—explicitly excluding same-sex couples and trans people. “Cause we don’t do the trans or the lesbians or gays,” Nettie said in the now-deleted clip. The duo emphasized that only “couples who can produce a child” were eligible for the special.

Republicans are just so weird. Why on earth would you make “Can the people at this table conceive a child with one another?” the criterion for whether you’ll sell someone a burger? Their psychological issues just leak into all aspects of their lives.

  • The disaster was that the immigration policy wasn’t matched with any meaningful policy to create more housing at an affordable price. Immigration is something Canada continues to need, but on housing politicians are torn between the demands of those who can’t afford housing and the demands of the corporations that build and own property, plus (to a lesser extent, because the gains aren’t real) homeowners who want their property to keep increasing in value. And as usual corporate interests tend to win out.

But maybe there could be corporate pressure for Canada to do something about housing, if it helps other (non-housing) corporations attract skilled workers from the USA and elsewhere.

  • It’s good to see an effort to keep track of this. It would be great to have something like this for all the people kidnapped by ICE, not just the academics. But that would be a huge project, and many have probably been snatched and whisked away without the case becoming public at all. Is there a database behind this that people could contribute to if they know someone who has been abducted by the government?

Also, I wonder whether just listing the stated reason gives too much credence to it. They’re all labelled terrorist sympathizers, and it’s usually a lie or a very spun way of saying “they objected to Israel’s genocide of Palestinians.” Maybe the format could be updated with a link to some more balanced information about each case - a media article or a wiki page?
