So I was banned from lemmy.ml for challenging the use of the slur ‘shitlibs’ as abusive hate speech. But lemmy.ml has the largest Linux community on Lemmy. Given the crazy bans and toxic moderation policies happening over there, could I ask BeeHaw admins to create a Linux community here?
For now, as @furrowsofar@beehaw.org has suggested, /c/foss would suffice.
I am already a subscriber there. I’m just hoping you guys consider adding one specific to Linux itself.
Thanks!
As the overall community grows, and there is more demand for niche communities, we will add these. We just aren’t there yet. Thanks for your support and reaching out.
As you wish, Chris. Thanks!
I think there’s some value to a more narrowly defined topic based community centered around Linux to draw from in order meet the desires of the greater Beehaw Community.
People searching for “Linux” communities will likely not search for “Free and Open Source Software” and “FOSS” and “FLOSS” and “Free Software” and “Libre Software” and “Operating Systems” to in attempt to find relevant communities. Their attention is likely exhausted after their original search for “Linux”. There’s a clear interest in Linux as a topic for discussion with evidence presented in the form of multiple requests I’ve seen for a Linux Beehaw community.
The Free and Open Source Software and the Operating Systems Beehaw Communities seem like they are both too general and too specific at the same time. They compete with Technology and Programming communities for mindshare while not capturing the attention of those who desire to discuss Linux specifically. People are not being primed by the community names alone in the moment of interest around discussing Linux. Theses are the appropriate places for discussion of Linux on Beehaw but it’s not immediately clear to those who would be interested.
Considering the role of nudges and small obstacles have on people, I hope adding a Linux community is considered by the Beehaw admins to continue to foster a thriving community.
