The risk of mechanical faults is all but eliminated, leaving pilot error as the only likely risk - without the certification, mechanical faults are much more likely and, in this case in particular, almost inevitable.

This quote stands out specifically because he chose to use a Logitech Bluetooth game controller to pilot the sub. All around madness.
Depressingly, it sounds like that controller was not even close to the most poorly-chosen component.
