Something big is happening, as Reddit seems to have purged literally every NSFW sub they know. Reason is always “unmoderated” despite some of the banned subreddits being fully moderated.
Edit: seems to have been a bug in automation (thanks @lefty7283@lemmy.world):

It’s still a good reminder on how quickly a community (or communities) thousands of people enjoy and in some cases rely upon can disappear.
Man, I hope lemmynsfw is ready, lol
As a quick reminder: don’t expect them to handle your load (lol) for free. If you are a gooner/goonette with some income, leave a tip for the server costs and consider volunteering for mod duties if you have time and some internet social skills. If you value your nsfw communities, they don’t exist without work, like any other community.
RIP lemmynsfw’s inbox.
Are they the only porn instance? I am surprised at little porn I see on here and when I do it’s all lemmynsfw.
Hosting NSFW content is an absolute ball-ache, so a lot of instances that are not NSFW focussed do not host it.
In the early days of feddit.uk, we decided to go the path of SFW, to simplify things.
I absolutely salute the lemmy-nsfw admins in taking that load on.
And it makes a lot of sense: If you’re going to deal with the headaches, you might as well focus entirely on them!As much as it sucks to say, it wouldn’t surprise me if this stuff on Reddit is for the same reason.
Unironically devastating for Reddit financially and could see a gooner exodus to Lemmy.
As far as I remember they weren’t monetizing NSFW subs, so I guess their reasoning is that banning them reduces server costs while not impacting their ads revenue.
Now what will be interesting is to see how much of Reddit’s userbase was there at least partly for the porn, and how many users will leave Reddit altogether because of this move
it’s a loss leader and is an important part of most business models
I’m against the ban, but I also don’t want that gooning here. Although that’s what drives like half of the internet so maybe it’s a good thing for the fediverse.
pretty much just lemmynsfw, and nsfw can easily be turned off here
It’ll be constrained to pro-gooning instances, most seem to be defederated from porn but the influx of users in general will spill over to the non-gooning instances.
Like - a lot of Reddit users seemed to have accounts specifically to interact with porn, I think that transfers well into the Fediverse, you just get your porn account on an instance that is federated with the porn ones.
Yep, and that will have spillover. There isn’t going to be an increase in porn on non-porn instances, but the growth of porn instances will increase general users, though not at a 1 to 1 rate.
That’s how mine works, and I use different apps to browse porn so those apps are logged into the correct account always.

Dr. Cox has joined the chat
You can just block that instance
Many technologies lived and died based on what the gooners chose, e.g. VHS vs betamax. I welcome them
As a horny pedant I need to tell you that’s not why Betamax failed.
Is it one of those internet “facts” like the eating spiders in your sleep one?
Betamax was used by climbers^1 , clearly everyone went with vhs to avoid them.
^1 a recomended sequence of moves is called a beta to this day
Gross
Remember when tumblr got rid of porn and everyone stopped using it.
Shockingly it’s still alive, and even moreso there’s still porn, albeit softcore and/or censored with links pointing to Bluesky and/or patreon. There are also pornbots that pop up and follow me every now and again.
This has been predicted for many years. Most were expecting it to happen before the IPO, since investors are afraid of porn.
They had also been gradually heading down this path for a long time, making porn harder and harder (heh) to find and view.
It’s not only porn. Today i google-image searched a skin condition. Most results were reddit links, but i wasn’t able to open any of them without their app as the subreddits were apparently 18+!
I wasn’t able to view any of the information as i refuse to install the app. Google should deprioritize the results that can’t be viewed in the browser.
You should still be able to navigate to those posts by changing the link to old.reddit.com. But I assume that will go away at some point too.
And the Firefox extension “old Reddit redirect” does it for you!
I love that extension
Or just switching to Show Desktop Site
Just request desktop mode, that bypasses it.
I know that trick, i just rarely use it and forgot about it 🤦♂️
That’s understandable. There are a whole lot of little tricks and workarounds you’ve gotta constantly keep in your head and recall on the spot to try and navigate the crap that is the modern Internet. In addition to all the other life stuff we’ve gotta remember!
In the top right of your internet browser, there should be a menu button. If you hit that, there should be a “Desktop Site” button. If you check that, the app prompt goes away. It’s annoying that it’s required, but at least you won’t be locked out
in other news, lemmy’s NSFW instances see an influx of users
Hi folks!
hello and welcome!
this cesspit is less bad!
Remember “Digg” ?
hopefully the fact lemmy is more decentralized should avoid another digg or reddit situation
I really hope so!
Worst case you bail for a different instance, ideally one that doesn’t defederate if your goal is not to have content blocked from you.
Howdy!
I wonder if we’ll see enough users for interactive communities to take off. I’m into literate erotic roleplay (basically cowriting smut), but there’s never been enough folks on the fediverse for me to try to get into it.
Can it be Linux themed?
I don’t see why not. I enjoy a little realism in them. I’ve looked up fine dining etiquette and how film development work for them.
The subs are back up for the record. According to an admin, it was a glitch.
The glitch being they got caught and people complained
Eh no need to get tin foil hat, imho.
I mean, one has to ask why they were setting up automated banning of these subreddits in the first place.
The reason for all of them was unmoderated. So it seems to me like they have/are testing a method to auto ban unmoderated subs. Not that crazy, imho.
If they are really testing things like that, it’s quite worrying that they did it on the production server…
Huffman was probably in a huge hurry to gargle Elon’s balls.
Thats just regular boring old Incompetence.
subs like r/boobs are unmodded?
Hence the glitch. A glitch is when doesn’t perform as expected or desired.
I see, I assumed trans_surgeries wasn’t a nsfw sub, so I was weary of why it would be in the list with the rest.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out they’re making a ban list for all these communities, but the ‘glitch’ was that someone turned it on before whatever PR move/manufactured scandal they were going to use to justify it was ready to go.
Or this was just a test fire to see how people would react.
That’s a pretty big glitch. 1. You have a nuclear button. 2. The omega thermal nuclear cluster bombs are pointed at a particular target
Uh huh. Like the glitch that put T_D on the front page - the entire front page.
One of those funny coincidences that keeps happening.
I see they’re following the Tumblr model:
- Get bought at overinflated values.
- Ban all NSFW content.
- Users leave and seek NSFW content elsewhere.
- Valuation plummets.
- “Actually, moderating NSFW is really hard you guys. We’re just going to try best efforts moderation only.”
- Sell at near total loss.
- There is still NSFW content on the platform, and the policy is used as a cudgel against LGBTQ accounts.
I don’t care about NSFW subs per se, but they’re useful canaries in the coal mine. If they’re gone gone, it’s a fine indicator of what’s about to come next.
No, your canaries are already long dead. It’s long been a process when Reddit admins don’t want a sub to exist but it isn’t actually breaking any rules to laser focus on the moderators, ban them the moment they have an excuse, immediately ban the sub for being unmoderated, refuse to give it to a new mod via reddit request and ban any replacement subs for recreating a banned sub. Hell, r/GamingCircleJerk has been laughing about some right wing gaming memes sub having that done to it just a few weeks ago.
They only care about it not looking like they are just nuking subs they don’t like is because they don’t want to scare off other users who might get antsy about having a community under those sorts of capricious admins.
This sounds a lot like an automation of that process that misfired. That they were all specifically banned for being “unmoderated” is what jumps out to me as telling.
Reddit accelerates it’s own downfall
Spez: “Daddy Elon wants me to get rid of all the twitter critical and trans related subs. How can I do it without it being too obvious?”
Snoo Lackey: “Easy. What we’ll do is ban a load of morally grey subs like porn and drug related ones along with the twitter critical and trans ones. Then, when the predictable uproar kicks off, we’ll wait awhile then announce it was all a terrible mistake and we’ll reactivate all the porn ones. We just won’t reactivate the twitter critical or trans ones. Because lets be honest - no one really cares and as long as the simpletons have their wank bank back, they’ll neither notice nor care either!”
Spez: “Brilliant!”
OK but how the FUCK did r/forcedcreampie survive the purge?
Under the New Founding Fathers, forced cream pies are ok, willing abortions are not.
Oh that’s the most vile and gut wrenchingly nauseating comment i read all year. Well done and well said.
Porn is made by actors who sometimes roleplay scenes that aren’t actually real.
r/drugs has been banned?? That was one of my favorite place on Reddit back in the days :(I haven’t found a community for that here :(
(Edit: Drug Reddit was amaziiing, especially r/shrooms r/trees r/dxm | can’t really start a community because I’m not regular enough in this area, I guess that’s a good thing)
Same, when I was a teenager it was Erowid for all my questions, then r/drugs in college. I also loved r/tooktoomuch, which had the best life lessons to offer.
havent heard of ‘Erowid’ in a minute. Great memories back then, simpler times
Is erowid still good? I have it enshrined in the back of my head as the place for plant info
Erowid is used by researchers still AFAIK. Notably on MDMA research (they teamed up with MAPS).
https://www.erowid.org/references/refs.php?C=MDMA%2F
Here’s one using it from last year: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39712538/
Erowid is still good, though I wish there was a little more info about current operations and projects outside of maintaining the experience report database. As far as I can tell, both Erowid Monthly and Erowid Extracts are dead, Ask Erowid is dead, DrugsData is not currently receiving samples, etc.
There’s reason to play some stuff close to the chest, obviously, but there used to be more activity than just the experience database, and it’s sad to see the other functions languish. But as a repository of drug information it’s still pretty great.
A newer good harm reduction/info site is tripsit.me, which also has a trip sit via chat service. Can’t speak to the quality of the chat service, over something like the Fireside Project which has been around for a while now, but the infosheets on tripsit are pretty good.
Edit: Ugh, going through the other Erowid sections again…beginning to think I need to step up and see if they want more volunteers. Lots of dead links where Wayback can probably help a ton, the Character vault can probably be expanded quite a bit, etc. But this all might just be the focus moving on a bit. I just wanted to see Ralph Metzner’s blog, since you hear so much about Tim Leary and Ram Dass but Metzner was right there with 'em.
I learned all the thing that kept me safe on there too; and the life story were interesting and also the trip reports and experiment!
This was something I couldn’t get IRL until a long time, and still, is not very active today (my friends and I are all busy we can’t really experiment !! Maybe next time we see each other)
That’s so sad. It was not a sub to sell anything but to help and comfort those who need it in this space.
Wonder how this move went for tumble
To be fair I don’t think that many people go to Reddit for porn. With Tumblr it seemed almost exclusive. But it’s still an odd move.
Porn on Reddit used to be good but has been awful since the rise of OnlyFans. Now almost every post on porn subreddits is someone shilling their onlyfans using the same 5 second tease clips across dozens of tenuously related subreddits. If the exodus happens to Lemmy, that is what it will be here.
OF killed good amateur porn
Edit: Boobs is banned because it was unmoderated apparently. i haven’t checked the others in the OPs list. i’ve logged into my porn account and there’s plenty of large and small porn subreddits still around so i don’t think this was a porn purge
OF killed good amateur porn
As I have seen it pointed out, it’s not just that, although it is a huge part of it. Another, sadly, is that there was so much uncontrolled porn floating around the internet, much of it was pretty fucked up - involuntarily filmed and/or published without consent, not traceable, even with very unclear ages, etc., etc.
So as a secondary effect, that I think is highly positive, most sites also just don’t allow for non-verified content, or at least are much better at removing anything remotely suspicious. That leaves the OF stuff as the main non-studio-produced source, as it allows for easy, professional verifications.
You don’t have to be verified to to post nudes on Reddit
this was literally why i still kinda used reddit. welp hello lemmynsfw!
So is there gonna be more porn on lemmynsfw now?
Certainly.
Nice.
