On a lathe? Doesn’t make sense. Maybe on a crucible or dewar or something…
I am a career machinist. I have witnessed a lathe accident so bad that everyone was sent home for a month. Don’t wear gloves when operating a lathe.
I am not a career machinist – but I have a tiny manual 10" lathe and I’m terrified of it.
