How cool is that?! AntennaPod creates a summary and stats of my year listening to podcasts directly on my device without sending it to the cloud!
My year 2024 in podcasts.
I think my ADHD shines through with podcasts, I start listening to the first 10 mins then drown out whatever they are talking about and then just give up listening. It’s a shame because there are many podcasts out there id like to listen to.
I don’t have ADHD, but I have the same with reading books. I can read articles in a newspaper, but once I take a book into my hands I fall asleep.
Shit, there’s a home assistant podcast? I didn’t need to know that
Here is mine!
I’ve not heard of self hosted or ask Noah.
What are they about?
Love the self hosted podcast, they talk about various experiences they’ve had (be it good, or bad) while trying to stop relying on big tech companies. They also try to bring projects to the spotlight and help people find cool openscource solutions. They get some fun guests in there as well.
Awesome. Thanks for the recommendation
Yes , I am the type fuck corporations , and let’s support good companies. Like Valve not perfect but better than the rest.
I am very partial to valve myself, while they aren’t perfect, I am not immune to propaganda, and own 3 valve shirts.
Self hosting , Linux and Open source.
Antennapod is highly underrated, even among Foss community. I have been enjoying it for 6 years and never cared for alt.
Of course it has yearly summary feature, along with hour counts etc.
I listened to a ton when I bike to and from work. 40 minutes gets like 2 episodes a day, plus when I am at work
Love to see MBMBaM!
It’s heavily affected by the fact that I used to listen to After the Revolution to fall asleep (in a good way! It’s a great book and Robert Evans’ voice is soothing IMO), but here’s mine:
Only 625 hours this year.
Usually just binge an older podcast. I already completed HoP and HoP: Indian, Africana and Chinese, and now I’m with Citations Needed. Philosophy This only play when I accidentally start an episode lol.
I recommend all of these, but it’s not a real summary. I’ve hopped around to many different apps since stitcher died. I like Antenna pod, but I switched to Podverse for a little bit before coming back to Antenna Pod. Iirc, Podverse did the queues better, but only if they had properly added support for the specific podcast. I lik Audio fiction, which means I’m constantly looking for new shows. So I encountered a lot that weren’t fully supported yet, got frustrated and switched back to Antenna Pod. I’ve gotten into the habit now of adding a podcast to the queue season by season, and it works ok.
And bonus, if you like Audio fiction, follow https://www.theend.fyi/ to find recommendations. It’s great!
I wonder when they’ll have clients for desktop or other OS, that way I could ditch Pocket Casts.
I thought I could synchronize what I was listening to and where I stopped with gpodder.net but this never worked because I never understood how to use it, even though I logged in on both desktop and phone, so I had to give up the idea of listening on the desktop and I only listen on the phone. If I am at home I sometimes connect to a Bluetooth speaker to have a nicer experience.
I ended up using the nextcloud gpodder sync app, works a treat, there’s even a nextcloud app for listening to podcasts in your browser, so I use that for desktop use.
So what exact features does it have? I need three:
- sync my subscription list between devices
- sync the time where I paused to listen to each podcast episode
- sync which episodes I already listened to
It does a decent job at all 3 from my experience
I also use Nextcloud gpodder - it’s been set and forget in my case, very easy. Use Kasts on desktop, and AntennaPod on my phone.
This seems like a good solution, but I also see it is missing iOS in its supported devices so it would affect my setup.
macOS/Win10, iPad, Android mobile, Shield TV, Alexa.
I use the casting/BT audio workaround yeah, oh and the subpar Alexa Skill.
What’s wrong with Pocket Casts?
Not open source.Edit: sike, it is
Their freemium model fooled me, it is indeed open-source
They went to a subscription model for using the desktop app… If we could buy it at once as it was possible before I wouldn’t even be looking for alternatives, but I despise subscriptions.
Funnily enough (although I haven’t looked thoroughly) I couldn’t find a way for this yet 🏴☠️
Any good recommendations for someone into:
- German (slice of life, politics?)
- UK politics? (Jimmy the Giant style, please)
- World History
- Curious Android style Tech and Engineering?
- Linux, but lwn-style not Linus-tips style?
For tech, check out Hard Fork.
- https://wrint.de/ has a lot of German shows also with politics and science
- https://www.alternativlos.org/ posts seldom but also politics and science
- https://podcaste97de5.podigee.io/ politics in german
For Tech maybe TechAltar and ColdFusion.
For Linux I can recommend Ask Noah Show , Linux Unplugged , Linux Matters and Destination Linux.
Love this app!
Does anyone know how to totally disable the Queue?
I love the app, but the summary was kind of shit 😁
