#friendica is one of the longest lasting #Fedi platforms, around longer than Mastodon for instance, some people say it’s the Facebook of the 'verse, but I’m not sure if that’s accurate. When I first joined the 'verse I still spent a lot of time of time on Facebook because of how little content I saw on GNU Social.

One of the folks I followed from their recommended I really try out Friendica as it supported significantly more protocols than GS did. I gave it a shot. While in 2023 most everyone, including GS, supports activityPub, so there’s a lot more content in general, Friendica still supports more than anyone else, including Diaspora* and Pump.io, and supporting RSS Feeds was what got me hooked. I never actually had used RSS regularly when it was more popular in the 00s-10s, I never really “got” it, and found it easier to just go to the websites than follow a feed. But having RSS in my social media feed, just like any other friend’s post, that was something completely different. It allowed me to get high quality content to read regularly, comment on, share with my friends etc., even though the content creators themselves hadn’t yet joined the 'verse. Plus their “add friend” feature is like magic, allowing me to just enter a www address and it would find a feed for it, even those that don’t seem to advertise anywhere on the site that they have RSS feed, or in some cases I suspect its baked into their base (Wordpress?), don’t even realize they have an RSS Feed.

I’m posting to this Lemmy group from Friendica right now, (where it shows as a “Friendica Forum” which is pretty much the same thing only missing the the ability to sort by hot/new/etc. But then again, the sort options it does use, might be the same.

Social Media isn’t collapsing, it’s getting better.

If you want to try it out clearly I like opensocial.at, but you can see if there’s a better one for you dir.friendica.social/servers or friendica.fediverse.observer/

#SorryNotSorry for being an evangelist here. I’ll post the feeds I follow in a bit.

I love the idea of Friendica. Unfortunately I can’t imagine any of my friends/family IRL switching away from big tech social media.

You never know. 20 years ago I didn’t think my mom would ever figure out how to use email, let alone spend free time on an online social media platform. Nothing is forever.

I had heard of someone setting up their Friendica Forum with SMS and email add-ons (maybe they used IFTT? I’m not sure) so that their family members could participate in the “group chat” in the preferred way of each individual. They had indicated that eventually most of them switched to Friendica so that they could get the full experience. I’ve never done it though.

    Thank you for sharing!

I’ve actually started using Mastodon a couple days ago, and learned you can make a RSS feed from someone’s profile. Sadly, you can’t turn your own homepage into a RSS feed, but I am hopeful that will be added in the future. Hell, I started using RSS for the very first time yesterday, with Feeder. Now I wish every website had a feed available. Just having one tab open for all my websites/news is way more easier to manage and convenient than having to jump from website to website.

There are some Friendica specific apps, like Friendiqa & Relatica, in addition to Friendica having been designed specifically to ensure that it remains compatible with any Mastodon or GNU Social app, I have several installed on my Android phone, but I find that I personally like the mobile web interface better, at least when I have my account set to using the FRIO theme (this is the one that looks like Facebook, but Friendica has several very different UI themes to choose from) though I did recently start using it as a “web app” by saving it as such after accessing it via Chrome. Not sure if I’ll keep that or not because I really try to avoid using Google services as much as is reasonable.

I signed up in the last few days and still struggling with it. I would love the ability to add RSS feeds but haven’t figured out how to do that. For example, I use nytimes.com/services/xml/rss/nyt/homepage.xml to connect to the NY Times on my RSS Reader, but when I input it into “Find People” or “Add Contact” on my instance of Frendica it can’t find it. Any ideas? Using Venera.social.
