Mastodon simply is a different thing than X/Bluesky. It’s more like RSS/Blog/IRC. It will never go mainstream unless they add (opt out) algorithms and a better search functionality. But maybe that’s just not worth it. Mastodon has already lost to Bluesky when it comes to being an open mainstream Twitter replacement.
I’m curious about if it’s even technically possible to build something federated that feels like a Twitter replacement, using the ActivityPub protocol.
Not much. Except for less competent leadership short term. And probably more forks long term.
True!
I don’t think so. Probably not. It’s a classical argument when starting a war (Germany/WW1 and Japan/WW2), that’s why I brought it up.
I.e. if you believe there is a very high risk for war at SOME point, then you probably want to take control of the situation and start the war at a time and place of your choice. If you can destroy 90% of NKs ICMBs (or other kinds of carriers) today, it’s better to start the war now, if the new technology will bring that number down to say 50% by tomorrow.
The conspiracy theorist in me says that it’s not impossible that the recent coup attempt in SK was somehow related to this kind of thinking. This is how the military tend to reason after all.

Maybe you could move abroad? Canada or the EU? I.e. some western country with a better welfare system. If you don’t have friends or family, that might be an option. And if you’re healthy enough.
I guess the counter argument would be that the situation will only get worse the longer you wait. That argument has been used many times in history.
That’s an argument I don’t agree with. I believe the perceived risks of nuclear fallout is negligible in most cases. Especially when talking tactical nukes. For sure a risk North Korea (or Russia) would be willing to take.
Isn’t it possible that China will find this situation intolerable as well? I find it quite likely that North Korea will change its attitude towards China if balls grow too big. Make demands etc.
I agree. But hopefully I’ll learn some educated arguments by asking this.
Use markdown instead.
Maybe better to recommend Doom Emacs, if no BS is a requirement. It takes time to make friends with vanilla Emacs.

Yes, but there might be a shift in power. It can have a progressive effect as long as there are enough jobs. Everyone will become more poor in absolute terms for sure. It could lead to more domestic productivity enhancing investments, which hopefully will lead to better education and work conditions.
But to be fair, nobody knows what will happen. We’re all just guessing and hoping. Usually the poor get fucked no matter what. It’s a gamble. But the current trade balance is for sure unsustainable and it relies on military domination (which also is unsustainable).
What do you believe?
It’s a gamble for sure.
Yep. Things will only get shittier in the US for as long as they/you don’t reverse the inequality trend. It’s impossible to have a functional democracy with the current gini coefficient. And it’s rapidly getting worse.
At some point, from an evolutionary perspective, it’s probably rational to crave chaos, system collapse or revolution, if you’re at the perceived socioeconomic bottom. Trump 2.0 might have been that point. Democrats didn’t present a credible solution, rather they just demonstrated that they don’t understand much. Just more neoliberal globalist crap, sprinkled with a touch of welfare and identity politics. Then it might be better to just opt for high risk and chaos, and hope you get lucky.
(I know there are good democrats as well, but they’re not in charge.)
Seems pretty cool! I have to try it out. Thanks for sharing.
